Hi All
Current and ex HMP Officers. I got out in 2000 after 11 years service. I could see the writing on the wall then with a new officer on accelerated promotion. Probably a high ranking desk pilot now.
I read the daily posts of serving officers and can't believe how bad it is for you all. Be strong and remember the POA is you. If you feel a situation is unsafe, put it in writing to the Governor, copy the local branch and keep a copy yourself. If it unfortunately goes bad, the governor will have some very difficult questions to answer as to why he failed to act on your concerns. If you fail to do this, then you are letting management get away scott free and they will never be required to answer these questions.
Its obviously quite different now to when I was in, but even as a basic grade I would refuse to do somethings when I believe my and inmates safety was at risk. When in those situations I used to requested that the governor who wanted me to do their bidding put their instruction in writing. They never would, why, because they new they would be in the sh1t if it had gone wrong.
Be safe now and there is life and jobs out there, your skills as a prison officer are respected. I well remember being told at Newbold Revel, that officers who served Pre-Fresh Start their average time for collecting pension was 18 months. With the information coming out of KTD how long will you collect your pension... if you make it
Be safe
